Belle Meade Plaza Redevelopment

Exciting Changes Coming to Belle Meade: The Redevelopment of Belle Meade Plaza
Belle Meade, a historically affluent and charming neighborhood in Nashville, is on the cusp of a significant transformation. The underutilized Belle Meade Plaza, located at 4500 Harding Pike, is set to be redeveloped into a vibrant mixed-use space known as Belle Meade Village. This ambitious project by AJ Capital Partners promises to bring a new dimension to the area, blending residential, retail, and green spaces.
A Vision for Belle Meade Village
The redevelopment plan envisions a walkable, design-forward village spanning 10.5 acres. This isn’t just a simple facelift; it’s a complete reimagining of the space to meet the evolving needs of the Belle Meade community. Belle Meade Village is designed to be an ecosystem where people can live, work, and relax within a beautifully connected environment.
Key features of the planned Belle Meade Village include:
- Residential Units: Approximately 388 apartments and condominiums are planned, offering new living options within this desirable neighborhood.
- Retail and Restaurants: Around 80,000 square feet of commercial space will house a variety of storefronts and dining establishments.
- Hotel: Plans include a boutique hotel with around 78 rooms.
- Green Space: A significant emphasis is being placed on creating green areas, with approximately 60% of the site dedicated to parks, public walkways, and lush landscaping.
- Richland Creek Integration: The project aims to activate Richland Creek, seamlessly connecting it with the Richland Creek Greenway, enhancing walkability to nearby Sylvan Park and McCabe Park.
The Timeline and Progress
AJ Capital Partners acquired the Belle Meade Plaza property in July 2023. By March 2025, demolition permits were obtained, and work to clear the site has commenced. The former Belle Meade Kroger, a long-standing fixture since 1978, closed its doors in late January 2025 to make way for the redevelopment. Other tenants, including Starbucks, have also vacated the premises.
Community Impact and Considerations
While many envision the redevelopment as a positive step towards growth and modernization, the project has faced some opposition from local residents. Concerns have been raised regarding potential increases in population density, traffic congestion, and environmental impacts. A group called Friends of Belle Meade Boulevard has even filed a lawsuit against the city concerning sidewalk construction related to the development, highlighting the community’s desire to preserve the area’s character.
Despite these concerns, the Metro Council approved the rezoning for the project in May 2023, with some modifications to address community feedback, such as building height restrictions.
